After a loss — calm first steps

A short, steady sequence for the hours after a home, renters, auto, or weather loss. Educational only — not legal, insurance, or claims advice. Parity does not file or adjust claims.

Keep the tone calm

Stress compresses judgment. These steps are a checklist of orientation — safety, documentation, and the right phone numbers — not a substitute for your policy language or a licensed professional.

1. Safety first

Get people and pets out of danger. Call emergency services if anyone is hurt or a structure is unsafe. Do not re-enter a damaged building until it is cleared.

2. Prevent further damage when safe

If you can do so safely, stop obvious ongoing damage (shut off water, board a broken window). Keep receipts for emergency repairs. Carriers often expect reasonable mitigation — confirm with yours.

3. Document before you discard

Photograph and list what you can see — rooms, vehicles, serial numbers if visible. Avoid throwing items away until your carrier says it is okay, except for health hazards.

4. Call your carrier or agent

Use the claims number on your card or declarations page, or your agent. Have policy number, date/location of loss, and a brief description ready. Parity is not a claims desk and does not submit claims.

5. Lean on prep you already did

Pre-loss photos, VIN/registration copies, inventory lists, and saved contacts speed the conversation. Parity’s claims-readiness checklist is educational prep — not a filing tool.

6. Pace decisions

You do not have to accept the first settlement number on the spot. Ask questions, keep notes, and involve a licensed agent or public adjuster if you need help understanding an offer. This page is not legal advice.

Not legal advice · not claims filing

Deadlines, coverage disputes, and liability questions vary by state and policy. For legal questions, talk to a qualified attorney. To start a claim, contact your carrier or agent directly.

Educational only — not insurance, legal, or financial advice. Demo product; no real claims are submitted through Parity.
